Our Story

Sustainable food systems are on display every Saturday morning during the growing season at the Organic Farmers’ Market in Port Washington.  Founded and managed by Port-based environmental health non-profit organization, Grassroots Environmental Education, it is the only organic farmers’ market in New York State.  The market has become a popular place for local residents who enjoy getting to know the farmers who grow their food.

The market is anchored by a certified organic farm - Demetra's Bio-Farm, LLC  from Southold, NY.  Other vendors at the market include purveyors of fish, pasta, flowers, bread, olive oil, honey, gluten-free baked goods, and other artisanal food and personal care items.

Especially popular with our market regulars are the freshly-baked organic blueberry muffins, goat cheese, and organic coffee.

If you’re near Port Washington any Saturday morning from the first week of June through November, we hope you’ll come and visit us.

The 2023 season will begin on Saturday, June 10th at 8 am and run until October 28th.

If You Care donates their sustainable baking papers to Grassroots Environmental Education for those organic blueberry, blueberry-raspberry, and raspberry-peach muffins you can find (if you time it right) at the Grassroots table. We love the synergy between our non-profit work and this excellent environmentally-conscious manufacturer.  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this much-appreciated support!
